History of Polaris® Powersports

Company Origins

The company originated in 1945 and it was called Hetteen Hoist & Derrick. Before entering the powersports industry, the company focused on making farm equipment. Two years later, they began a quest to provide a solution for making traveling in snow easier. This led them to successfully engineer their first-ever snowmobile, which changed the way how people traveled. It wasn’t until 1960 that the company changed its name to Polaris.

The Company Sold

Facing a sudden market boom, the owners realized they needed to act fast for the company to remain standing. Therefore, the company was sold to Textron.

The Fallout

A few years later, Textron fell out of the scene as the company faced liquidation and bankruptcy. President of Polaris, W. Hall Wendel Jr., was instructed to sell the company, but instead led a buyout of Polaris and quit Textron. 

Stronger Than Before

With just 100 workers, Polaris began the work of pulling themselves up by their bootstraps. The Textron debt was repaid ahead of schedule and the company focused on innovation and improvement with every new model.
